Management and Education in Second Chance Schools

Introduction

The aim of the Course is for trainees to enrich their knowledge of the basic principles and elements of the philosophy, teaching and assessment practice of adult education, and of the teaching methods underpinning the organisation and operation of Second Chance Schools (SCS). It focuses on enhancing knowledge, skills and competences so that participants can successfully meet the demands of the educational process within the framework of Second Chance Schools.

By attending the teaching units of the Course, participants will strengthen and upgrade their knowledge of the operating framework of Second Chance Schools (SCS), including the philosophy, principles and teaching practices of the curriculum. The aim is to familiarise participants with techniques for exploring the educational needs of SCS learners, for welcoming them and for supporting their smooth reintegration into the school environment, and to develop their ability to select the appropriate teaching techniques and methods of adult education. Participants in the Course will become acquainted and familiar with the assessment process and the descriptive assessment model, and with their role as trainer–mentor for SCS learners, and will be able to coordinate group work creatively, fostering dialogue and critical thinking.

Teachers and education executives who attend the Course will be able to use the Training Certificate and the Certificate of Successful Attendance to obtain the maximum number of points under the selection and scoring criteria for Second Chance Schools (SCS), specifically under criterion 1.2.a Training in SDE-related subjects, which applies to the following cases:

1) Prospective educational executives (Directors and Deputy Directors of Second Chance Schools)

2) Permanent teachers wishing to be seconded to Second Chance Schools.

3) Hourly-paid teachers wishing to be recruited as trainers in Second Chance Schools.

4) Psychologists and career counsellors seeking employment in Second Chance Schools

Delivery Method

Training is delivered exclusively by distance learning, using a dedicated e-learning platform. It is asynchronous distance learning with notes, which makes it particularly easy for working people to take part. This type of training is a flexible form of professional development, as there are no time or place restrictions. It is based on the principles of open education and meets the needs of personalised learning. In addition to the notes (pdf file), which have been prepared in line with the principles of distance learning, the training includes recorded webinar presentations of 5 to 10 minutes, multiple-choice tests, optional essay-type assignments, as well as additional material (ppt presentations, articles, guidelines) that the Course instructor shares with trainees during the course of the lessons.

Type of Certificate

Trainees who successfully complete the Course are awarded a Training Certificate by KEDIVIM of the University of Piraeus, together with a Supplementary Annex.

Upon successful completion of the Course, participants are intended to:

1In terms of knowledge:

describe the principles of Adult Education and the barriers to learning, understand the concept of the group and its stages of development, and define what a group is. present the history of Second Chance Schools (SCS) and understand the operating framework and curriculum of SCS define the characteristics of the learners, the teaching techniques that engage them and the teaching methods that underpin these schools understand the needs of the learners and their own role as trainers–facilitators in the learning process analyse the particularities of planning a teaching unit and planning a daily lesson. describe the principles, characteristics and particularities of the learning process understand the principles that govern the dynamics of the learning group organise adult learning groups effectively analyse the problems and needs of vulnerable social groups. recognise the importance of assessment and self-assessment, as well as the related methods and techniques

Assessment

The learning outcomes are assessed through self-assessment tests for each Teaching Unit and the submission of an individual assignment (a Lesson Plan for Second Chance Schools) at the end of the Course.

GROUP D (-50%): Graduates and administrative and academic staff of the University of Piraeus, and participants who have attended another KEDIVIM Course of the University of Piraeus within the last 18 months
