Banking – Management & Strategy
Introduction
The training Course “Banking – Management & Strategy” is structured into two self-contained teaching/thematic Units, each lasting three months. Through these Units, the Course focuses on the main products and functions of banks, as well as the risks that banks (must) take on in order to contribute to social welfare. At the same time, it examines the role of technology, information technology and other forces of change in the banking system, with emphasis on the competition banks face from fintech companies; it describes the risks faced by banks and explores the problems arising from asymmetric information. In addition, it analyses the complex interactions of banks with the economy, the markets, the authorities (government, central bank and other supervisory authorities) and all stakeholders, as well as the broad safety net for banks, while also examining the incentives of all those involved, from customers and ordinary bank staff to officials of supervisory authorities and governments. Finally, it describes the dynamics of banking crises and highlights the economic rationale of the complex institutional framework governing the operation of banks and its potential contribution to social welfare.
