Marketing for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises
Introduction
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of the Greek economy, as well as of Europe. For this reason, particular emphasis is placed on improving their competitiveness in today’s international economic environment. Consequently, decisions regarding SMEs’ choices must be based on well-founded information and techniques derived from the scientific methods provided by the discipline of Marketing. Marketing is about customer orientation as the ultimate goal of every activity. It is crucial that this philosophy inspires all functions of the business. This focus naturally also concerns the outward orientation of SMEs, which is widely discussed today. A major gap in this area is the lack of appropriate knowledge and practices to enable SMEs to develop and promote their exports.
Essentially, marketing is the business and social process that identifies the needs and wants of consumers and determines in which markets a business can compete successfully, so that it can design the appropriate products, services and programmes to “serve” those needs and wants. Marketing, however, is more than just a social process: above all, it is the philosophy that guides a business in achieving its planned objectives.
The ultimate aim of the Course is to train participants through asynchronous distance learning. More specifically, the Course seeks both to improve participants’ position in the labour market and to disseminate scientific knowledge, as it provides them with empirical knowledge of Market Economics. In detail, the Course aims to familiarise participants with the application of the principles, theories and tools of Marketing (MKT) so that SMEs can become sustainable and competitive both domestically and abroad. At the same time, it presents the necessary actions, from planning to execution, and the promotional policies that should accompany the entry of goods and services into a foreign market, while the Course is also supplemented by case studies.
