Transactions on the Blockchain
Introduction
The Course “Transactions on the Blockchain” provides an in-depth exploration of how transactions are executed, validated and recorded on blockchain networks. The aim of the Course is to familiarise participants with the technical mechanisms and protocols that enable secure, transparent and decentralised transaction processing on various blockchain platforms, such as Ethereum (public) and the Xenios private blockchain. The Course covers key concepts relating to cryptographic security, consensus mechanisms and transaction structures.
Upon successful completion of the course, the following are pursued:
- Understanding how digital currencies work
- Understanding how digital ownership titles work
- Ability to create a digital wallet
- Ability to carry out transactions with digital wallets
- An application in which the objective will be to create a security on the blockchain and exchange it for a currency from one digital wallet to another
Scientific Director
Sotirios Karkalakos,
Professor, Department of Economics, University of Piraeus
Target Audience
The Course is aimed at professionals in the consulting, banking and energy sectors, shipping and the public sector who seek to understand the practical applications of blockchain. Participants will focus on practice and on creating a digital wallet, carry out transactions with digital money, and gain an understanding of decentralised currency exchange mechanisms that operate without intermediaries and of the mathematical principles that govern them.
Admission Requirements
Participants must have:
- Basic computer skills
- Internet access
- A personal email account
Delivery Method
Training is delivered exclusively through distance learning, using a dedicated e-learning platform. It combines synchronous and asynchronous distance learning with notes, which makes it particularly easy for working people to participate. This type of training is a flexible form of continuing education, as there are no restrictions of time or place. It is based on the principles of open education and meets the needs of personalised learning.
Type of Certificate
Trainees who successfully complete the Course are awarded a Training Certificate by KEDIVIM of the University of Piraeus, together with a Supplementary Annex. If successful completion of the Course is not possible owing to discontinuation of studies or failure in the examinations, the trainee is awarded a Certificate of Attendance by KEDIVIM of the University.

Units
- Overview of blockchain technology and its architecture
- Blockchain transaction structures (inputs, outputs, digital signatures)
- Cryptographic methods for securing transactions (hashing, public/private keys)
- Consensus algorithms (Proof of Work, Proof of Stake, etc.) and transaction validation
- Smart contracts and automated transaction processing
- Use cases for blockchain transactions (Ethereum and Xenios blockchain use cases)
- Assignment allocation
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the Course, the aim is:
Understanding of how blockchain transactions are structured, executed and validated on various platforms (e.g. Bitcoin, Ethereum).
Understanding of the cryptographic techniques (hashing, digital signatures, public/private key systems) that ensure the security and integrity of transactions.
Understanding of the various consensus algorithms (e.g. Proof of Work, Proof of Stake) and how they affect transaction verification and network security.
Development of technical skills for designing, creating and analysing transactions on blockchain platforms, with an understanding of inputs, outputs and digital signatures.
Development of technical programming skills relating to smart contracts, for automating complex transactions on blockchain networks such as Ethereum and the private Xenios blockchain.
Ability to critically evaluate the performance and security of blockchain transactions, identifying potential risks or inefficiencies.
Ability to ensure secure transaction processing by understanding cryptographic vulnerabilities and how to secure blockchain operations.
Ability to apply blockchain technology to various transaction use cases, such as financial transactions, etc.
Assessment
Learning outcomes are assessed through a final integrative assignment of 700-1,000 words, which is made available on specific dates and submitted to the Secretariat's email for grading.
